I had the issue with Apple CarPlay disconnecting after roughly 2 mins after making connection with the lightning cable. I tried with two lightning cables and two iPhones (happened with one phone and not the other.) I found that the "Onavo" App that works as a VPN to save date is causing this disconnect with CarPlay. Vehicle must be properly equipped with compatible Uconnect system. Vehicle must be registered for Uconnect Access or SiriusXM Guardian fulfilling all registration and subscription requirements. Vehicle must be located within the 50 United States or Canada and have an active and usable cellular connection. [1] Send & Go requires Uconnect Navigation.
Just did the uconnect update that was sent to my 8.4” today. Update was successful but now my backup camera icons are overlapped and I can’t take phone calls while my phone is plugged in and connected to car play. Regular Bluetooth phone calls are fine, but when plugged in it forces call audio...

The only thing I would really use would be Google Maps which Apple is making available to CarPlay in iOS 12. If I'm understanding it,your iPhone X and car are frequently disconnecting and reconnecting, typically after you've started driving for about 10 or so minutes.
